Our Story

DeStijl Restaurant was founded in 2018 by Chef Jan de Vries, who wanted to create a dining experience that celebrated his Dutch heritage and his passion for art. Named after the influential Dutch artistic movement, De Stijl, our restaurant brings together the precision and harmony of this artistic philosophy with the rich traditions of Dutch cuisine.

De Stijl (Dutch for "The Style") was founded in 1917 in the Netherlands and is characterized by the use of primary colors, straight lines, and balance through the use of opposition. Similarly, at DeStijl Restaurant, we strive to create harmony through contrasting flavors, precise cooking techniques, and visually striking presentations.

Located in a beautifully restored canal house in Amsterdam, our restaurant features interiors inspired by the geometric patterns and primary colors of De Stijl, creating an immersive artistic environment for our guests.

Our Chef

Chef Jan de Vries

Born and raised in Amsterdam, Chef Jan de Vries developed his culinary skills in renowned kitchens across Europe before returning to his homeland to celebrate Dutch cuisine. With over 15 years of experience, Chef Jan combines traditional Dutch cooking techniques with modern approaches, creating dishes that are both familiar and innovative.

Chef Jan's passion for art, particularly the De Stijl movement, influences his approach to cooking and plating. He sees each dish as a canvas, where flavors, textures, and colors come together in harmony, just as Mondrian and other De Stijl artists balanced their compositions.

"My goal is to create dishes that not only taste extraordinary but also tell a story about Dutch culture and artistic heritage," says Chef Jan. "I want our guests to experience both a culinary and visual journey when they dine with us."
